NVIDIA open-sources Reshard collective; NeMo RL benchmarks show ~2.7x–5.7x RL weight-refit speedups
NVIDIA Technical Blog introduces Reshard, a collective that reframes RL post-training weight refit (moving updated policy weights from training GPUs to inference GPUs under mismatched parallelism) as a DTensor-to-DTensor transfer that ships only the theoretical minimum shard intersections, instead of gather-and-broadcast of full parameters. An open-source reference, NCCL M2N Reshard, is in NVIDIA/nccl-extensions; NeMo RL integrates it with a hybrid path that Reshards dominant feed-forward projection weights and keeps gather-and-broadcast for smaller ones. On DGX H100 and DGX GB200, NVIDIA reports 2.7x–5.7x speedups vs the conventional path—e.g. Qwen 3 235B 6.4s→1.9s and DeepSeek v3 671B 14.9s→2.6s on H100—and a refit-only microbenchmark of about 4.3s for Qwen3.8 2.4T BF16.
Why it matters
RL post-training refit traffic scales with model size; turning layout remapping into a collective with an open NCCL reference targets a real alignment bottleneck.
