About Manus
Manus is an AI agent that works on a computer in the cloud: it researches, builds spreadsheets and slide decks, puts websites online, and lets you walk away while it does. Version 2.0, released on September 28, 2026, brought a new foundation, a desktop workspace and automations that start on a signal.
What it is
Describe a task in plain language and Manus opens a browser, writes code and handles files inside a temporary cloud computer, working step by step until it can hand you a report, a spreadsheet, a deck or a live web page. The help center says this work runs on cloud virtual machines, and that credits are charged for model tokens, those machines and any third-party APIs a task calls. For individual users, the contract is with Butterfly Effect, the company that makes Manus.
Manus 2.0, released in September, runs on a new foundation called Cascade, which keeps a project light and brings in specialized tools only when the work needs them. In one tested configuration, Manus says, it used 23.2% fewer tokens, finished 28.2% faster and cost 32% less than the previous system (as reported by the vendor). The company is careful to add that this is one configuration, not an average.
Manus 2.0 is not a version update. It’s a new architecture, new products, and new capabilities.
Who it’s for
People whose work is research, gathering material, writing reports and building presentations: analysts, marketers, operators, solo founders. You don’t need to code. Developers who want an agent inside their own product will be better served by an open-source library such as Browser Use.
What stands out
Work that starts on a signal. Tasks used to run only on a schedule. Now a new email, a Slack message, a calendar event or a Notion update can kick one off, and you set it up by saying in one prompt what to watch and what to do.
A computer that stays on. You can buy a dedicated Ubuntu cloud server, from $30 a month as of 2026-10-26, so bots, scripts and websites keep running after you close your laptop.
A desktop workspace. The desktop app is now Manus Studio. It works with the files and tools already on your computer and adds two new workspaces, one for editing video and one for making games.
Your phone as a remote. Ask from your phone and Manus will operate your own computer.
Getting started
Sign up at manus.im. As of 2026-10-26, the free plan gives you 300 credits a day and one task at a time, enough to try simple jobs. Pro starts at $20 a month with 4,000 credits and 20 tasks at once. Team starts at $20 per seat a month and adds SSO and an opt-out from data training.
For a first run, give it something you’ve done yourself and can judge, such as a list of competitors, then adjust how you describe the task.
How it compares
Unlike the open-source Browser Use and Open Interpreter, Manus is a finished, hosted product: no environment to set up, no model to choose, just a web page. The trade-off is paying in credits and running everything in its cloud.
Worth knowing
Credits are spent according to how complex and how long a task is, and only while it runs, so big jobs can drain an allowance quickly. As of 2026-10-26 the help center sets a few limits: free users can spend at most 1,500 daily credits a month, and only on Manus 2.0 lite; monthly credits from a subscription reset at the end of each billing period if unused; and purchased credits may stop working once a subscription is cancelled. Credits used by tasks that fail because of a technical problem on Manus’s side are refunded in full.
Each action is billed when the next one starts, so a balance can briefly go negative. New tasks are blocked until the credits refresh.
Individual use falls under the Terms of Use; the Team plan, the API and other business services come under a separate Master Services Agreement and order form. The terms let the company change, suspend or end parts of the service at any time without notice.
If you stop paying for a Cloud Computer, the machine is shut down and the working files, tools and databases on it are deleted. Only results Manus already delivered in the chat are kept.
Why it matters
It reset what “agent” means to a mainstream audience.
