Runway

AI models and tools for generating and editing video, images and audioReference profile

About Runway

Runway is the generative media platform from Runway AI, Inc. One web workspace generates and edits video, images and audio, using Runway's own models such as Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 alongside third-party models including Kling, Seedance and Nano Banana Pro. Runway Dev offers the same models to developers through an API. Since 2026-10-26, paid users can build their own small creative apps in plain language with App Studio. As of 2026-11-01, individual paid plans start at $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually.

What problem it solves

Making a video for an ad, a film or a brand often means hopping between several generative models, image editors and editing tools, and the prompts and settings that work tend to stay with a few people. Runway puts models from different sources, an asset library and editing tools in one workspace, all billed in a single credit currency.

App Studio goes after the second problem. Runway's blog says a team's creative process usually sits in one person's prompts and settings, so everyone else either waits for that person or gets a different result. App Studio turns such a process into a small app with its own interface, where teammates only upload material and fill in a few inputs.

We are building AI to simulate the world through merging art and science.

Runway About page (the company's own words)

Core capabilities

  • Many models: the pricing page lists Runway's own Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 and Gen-4 Image next to third-party image, video and audio models such as Kling 4.0, Seedance 2.0 Pro, Nano Banana Pro and Lyria 3.
  • Agent and Workflows: every paid plan includes what Runway calls an Agentic creative collaborator, and an Agent session or Workflow that works can be turned into an app in one click.
  • App Studio (launched 2026-10-26): describe the tool in plain language and App Studio writes, tests and hosts the app, with previews, rollback and code visible to anyone who wants to inspect it. Built-in apps include Character Swap, AutoComp and Precise Edit.
  • Runway Ads (launched 2026-10-27): the changelog says it reads the best-performing ads on Meta, Google and TikTok, generates variants for each placement and publishes the ones that are approved.
  • Fits into existing tools: plugins for Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve, plus Runway MCP.
  • Runway Dev: one API for image, video and audio models from Runway and other labs, with automatic routing by a preference for cost, latency or quality.

Who uses it

Runway's home page says more than 60 million creatives use it, a figure the company reports itself. The Enterprise page picks a few cases: a project by Tool of North America for Under Armour saved 2 weeks of production time, a Tropico project for the same brand saved 80% of the cost of a traditional VFX pipeline, and Jon Erwin, writer and director of the Amazon Prime series House of David, appears among the customer quotes. The App Studio post says the architecture firm KPF built an app during early access that lets designers mark what should move in a rendering, draw a camera path and get video back. These are all cases Runway chose to publish.

How it compares

Like Luma, Runway offers both its own models and third-party ones and bills in credits. As of 2026-11-01, Luma's individual plans start with Plus at $30 a month, while Runway's entry paid plan is $15 a month and it also has a free tier with 125 one-time credits. The two companies count credits differently, so credit totals can't be compared one to one.

Kling AI is built around its own Kling 4.0 video model and Kling Image 3.0, and also offers a canvas, an Agent and MCP/CLI access. Kling 4.0 is also on Runway's pricing page, which makes Runway more of a creative platform that gathers many vendors' models; collaboration features such as App Studio and the Team plan's shared credit pool are what set it apart.

Who it's for / Not for

Good fit:

  • Creators and small teams who want to try many video, image and audio models in one place.
  • Brand, advertising and film teams that want more colleagues to run a set creative process (App Studio needs a paid plan).
  • Developers who want to plug several media models into their own products through one API.

Not a fit:

  • Teams that need fixed, predictable generation costs, since prices vary by model, duration and resolution.
  • Teams that require open-source, self-hosted or offline tools.
  • Users who don't want their inputs and outputs used for model training and don't plan to sign an enterprise contract.

Getting started

  1. Sign up for the free tier at runway.com to get 125 one-time credits and test ideas with a selection of models.
  2. Move to Standard or a higher individual plan for watermark-free output, 4K upscaling and every model.
  3. For teams, the Team plan (2 to 9 people) adds shared projects and a shared credit pool, and paid users can turn a routine process into an app in App Studio and share it with colleagues.
  4. Developers create a project in the Runway Dev developer portal, buy credits and get an API key.

Pricing & license

As of 2026-11-01, the pricing page and Team page list the following (US dollars, tax may apply):

  • Free: $0, 125 one-time credits that don't expire, 5GB of storage.
  • Standard: $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually. 625 credits a month, up to 3 projects, no watermarks, 20GB of storage.
  • Pro: $35 a month, or $28 a month billed annually. 2,250 credits a month, 1 Brand Kit, 1 custom voice clone, Runway MCP, 100GB of storage.
  • Max: $95 a month, or $76 a month billed annually. 9,500 credits a month, unused credits roll over for 1 month, HDR and ProRes output, 500GB of storage.
  • Team: $69 per seat a month, or $55 per seat a month billed annually. Each seat adds 6,900 credits a month to a shared pool that rolls over for 1 month.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing, with SSO, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 27001, no training on customer data, and legal indemnification.

Credit cost depends on the model; Gen-4.5, for example, costs 60 credits per 5 seconds of video. Monthly credits on Standard and Pro don't roll over, and extra credits come in purchases of at least 1,000 that never expire. Building, running and hosting App Studio apps all draw on the existing credit balance. On Runway Dev, API credits cost $0.01 each and Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second.

Risks & limits

  • Costs are hard to predict: credit prices differ widely by model, resolution and duration, and discounts on third-party models have end dates (the Kling 4.0 offer runs until 2026-11-30).
  • Data used for training: the Terms of Use say inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve Runway's models; the Team page lists no training on customer data as an Enterprise benefit.
  • Rights and limits on outputs: the terms say the company claims no ownership of outputs and doesn't restrict their commercial use, but outputs may resemble other users' results, and using outputs to build similar or competing products is prohibited.
  • Terms can change: the terms say the company may change subscription fees and features at any time.
  • Output quality: the terms state there is no guarantee that results will be accurate or reliable.

Our verdict

Runway today both builds its own video models and gathers many vendors' models in one creative platform, alongside an API and a world-model business aimed at robotics. For creative teams, the value is comparing and combining several models in one workspace, and App Studio turns one person's know-how into tools the whole team can reuse. The trade-offs are a layered credit system whose prices shift by model, and data-training terms that should be settled before buying. Feature updates follow the official changelog.

Why it matters

Runway offers video generation models and editing tools, and was early in bringing generative video into filmmaking.
