Speeding up planning decisions with AI

Google DeepMind, with the UK government, Google Cloud and Faculty, built PlanAssist on Gemini to help planning officers with householder applications: checking documents and drawings, heritage and policy constraints, prior objections, and drafting cited assessment reports, while officers keep the final decision.

In pilots in Barnet, Camden and Dorset, officer assessment time fell by up to about 58%, and more than 70% of generated reports needed no edits; the tool is entering a 12-month Beta with 12 more councils (15 in total), and subject to testing the government plans to offer it to all councils in England in 2027.

PlanAssist has shown it can cut the time planning officers spend assessing householder applications by up to 58%.
