RAG for Technical Manuals
Using industrial installation and maintenance manuals as its example, PageIndex explains where vector retrieval struggles on long technical documents: chunking splits checklists from their context, similarity is not relevance, and a fixed top-K misses key passages. PageIndex says that on a question about the pre-lift inspection checklist and lug locations, Google's Ask the Manual missed the checklist on page 20 and Figures 5 to 7, while PageIndex, retrieving by document structure, returned the full checklist and Figures 5 through 12.
In highly technical manuals, many terms and phrases may appear semantically similar yet refer to very different mechanisms, conditions, or subsystems.
