Behind The Scenes of Bun Install

The Bun team looks back at the hardware assumptions behind earlier package managers and argues that today's install bottleneck is system calls rather than disk or network I/O. The post walks through Bun's techniques, including fewer syscalls, binary manifest caching, faster tarball extraction, a leaner lockfile, OS-native file copying and per-thread memory pools. Bun claims its installer averages about 7 times the speed of npm, roughly 4 times pnpm and around 17 times yarn.

Bun is fast because it treats package installation as a systems programming problem , not a JavaScript problem.
