Why a University of Pittsburgh professor standardized his teaching on marimo
University of Pittsburgh professor Matt Burton teaches a Writing Machines course whose students range from CS majors to people who have never coded, and Google Colab had caused frequent reproducibility problems. He turned Markov chain, recurrent network and GPT-2 fine-tuning exercises into slider-driven marimo apps on molab, whose GPUs let the class fine-tune together in one session. Every student finished all 3 training exercises, something the previous year's cohort had not managed.
Writing Machines will run again in Fall 2026.
