Shanghai Jiao Tong University team describes AutoDNA in Nature, a lab where AI agents design and run DNA experiments on their own
A Shanghai Jiao Tong University team, with Xiangfu Laboratory in Jiashan and the company Yuanzi Zhishu Technology, describes AutoDNA in Nature, an automated molecular biology lab. From a simple prompt, a team of AI agents designs and runs an experiment end to end while robotic arms move samples between instruments. It coordinates more than 20 types of instruments across over 11,000 steps, covering DNA synthesis, transcription, amplification and sequencing; humans only restock reagents and labware and maintain hardware. In four tests it matched expert-tuned yields for enzymatic DNA synthesis, ran parallel protocols 3.2 times faster, wrote a digital message into DNA and read it back exactly, and found and confirmed a clinically detected cancer-linked mutation, KRAS G13D.
Why it matters
Lab automation is moving from single tasks to AI running whole experiments, and this Nature paper shows a working example in molecular biology.
