Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite returns its first AI response from Gemma 4 on a TPU in orbit
Google Research says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, launched earlier this month, finished commissioning and ran early ML tests on its TPUs. This week the onboard Gemma 4 open model answered an uplinked prompt with a space haiku, which Google calls the first response from a data center class TPU in orbit. Thermal and radiation tests are next; twin satellites are planned for 2027.
Why it matters
It is the first in-orbit check of Google's plan to power AI compute with solar energy in space, one possible route around the power and cooling limits facing ground data centers.
