Opera ships local AI in early preview in Opera One, letting websites and extensions use on-device models
Opera began shipping local AI as an early preview in Opera One, with Opera GX and Neon to follow. Its implementation of WebAI, a proposed web standard, lets sites and extensions use on-device models for text generation and classification; initial models include Google's Gemma and, on Macs, Apple's foundation model. It is opt-in with per-site permissions.
Why it matters
A browser-level local model interface could let developers add AI to sites and extensions without running inference or paying per request (per Opera); adoption depends on WebAI standardization and device hardware.
