Reddit says it will shift to a primarily logged-in experience to curb AI scraping

On Oct 29, with its Q3 earnings, Reddit said it will gradually move to a primarily logged-in experience, testing first in select markets outside the US this quarter, with no global timeline yet. Logged-out visitors can still reach the homepage and content opened from search or shared links; commenting and voting stay login-only. Reddit is also relaunching a read-only incognito mode in its app.

Why it matters

CEO Steve Huffman said the move aims to improve personalization, grow ads and stop data scraping. Reddit licenses data to Google and OpenAI and has sued Anthropic and Perplexity; TechCrunch says it strengthens its hand in AI licensing.
