About Impeccable

Impeccable is an open-source design skill and CLI for AI coding agents: one skill carries 24 design commands, with a live in-browser iteration mode and 62 deterministic detector rules aimed at the stock patterns of AI-generated frontends. The supported-tools list in the README includes Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI. It is Apache-2.0, and the public skills, commands, CLI and detection engine are free. As of 2026-10-26 the latest release is engine-v0.1.17, published on GitHub 2026-10-24 07:26 (UTC+8).

What problem it solves

The homepage headline is The missing design vocabulary for agents., with a subhead about turning AI slop into interfaces fit to ship. The GitHub description calls it a design language that makes AI harnesses better at design.

Problem and approach. The README says every model trained on the same SaaS templates, so without guidance the same tells recur: Inter on every page, purple-to-blue gradients, cards nested in cards, gray text on colored backgrounds. Impeccable packages design knowledge as a skill agents can call. /impeccable init writes PRODUCT.md with product context, /impeccable document generates DESIGN.md from the existing visual system, and the commands design and edit against that context.

Origins. The README says Anthropic's frontend-design was the first widely used design skill for Claude and that Impeccable started from it.

Company history. The repository was created 2025-11-16 09:52 (UTC+8). A post on the author's blog dated 2026-07-02 announced Renaissance Geek as the company behind Impeccable, funded by a16z in a round led by Anish Acharya, together with a GitHub partnership.

Recent releases ship on three tracks, skill, CLI and detection engine: engine-v0.1.17 on 2026-10-24 07:26 (UTC+8), skill-v4.7.0 on 2026-10-20 01:52 (UTC+8) and cli-v4.7.0 on 2026-10-20 01:53 (UTC+8).

Core capabilities

24 commands. The docs group the commands into six sets, Create, Evaluate, Refine, Simplify, Harden and System: shape produces a design brief first, audit checks accessibility, performance and responsiveness, critique evaluates hierarchy and clarity, polish is the final pass before shipping, and typeset, layout, colorize and animate handle type, layout, color and motion.

Detector. The README says 62 deterministic rules cover AI-slop tells and general design quality, such as side-tab borders, purple gradients, bounce easing, line length, small touch targets and skipped headings. The CLI and browser extension run these rules with no LLM and no API key; npx impeccable detect scans a directory, an HTML file or a URL, offers JSON output and GitHub Actions annotations, and signals findings through exit codes.

Design hooks. The installer can add hooks in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot and Grok Build so the detector runs after the agent edits UI files and hands findings back to the agent.

Live mode. The live and generate commands produce variants of an element on a page served by a running dev server and write the accepted one back to source; the FAQ says both work with web projects.

Who uses it

As of 2026-10-26 the GitHub API shows 87,578 stars, 5,234 forks; the GitHub API's open_issues_count (which includes open issues and PRs) is 39.

Integrations. The company page names GitHub as its first partner and says Impeccable is built into the GitHub Copilot app, turned on under Settings → Experimental (as reported by the vendor). The README also lists a VS Code extension on the Visual Studio Marketplace, the Claude Code plugin marketplace and a Grok Build plugin as install channels.

Releases. From 2026-10-02 to 2026-10-24, GitHub Releases took the skill from 4.4.0 to 4.7.0 and the detection engine from 0.1.10 to 0.1.17.

How it compares

Against Anthropic frontend-design: the README says Impeccable started from frontend-design. frontend-design is a single SKILL.md described as guidance for distinctive, intentional visual design when building new UI or reshaping an existing one; Impeccable adds PRODUCT.md and DESIGN.md project context, 24 commands, a live mode and a detector that runs without an LLM.

Against UI UX Pro Max skill: that project is MIT and describes itself as An AI skill that provides design intelligence for building professional UI/UX across multiple platforms.; Impeccable is Apache-2.0 and ships a detector CLI that runs in CI and reports results through exit codes.

Who it's for / Not for

Good fit:

  • Developers, designers and PMs who build frontends with AI coding tools and want fewer template tells.
  • Teams with an existing design system that need new pages to follow its colors, components and rules.
  • Teams that check UI issues automatically in CI or pull requests, with JSON output and GitHub Actions annotations from the detector.

Not a fit:

  • Projects centered on non-web interfaces: the FAQ says live and generate work with web projects.
  • Environments that allow no outbound requests: the design-direction feature calls the site's API and the version check runs at most once a day by default.
  • Coding tools that do not allow hooks: automatic checks depend on each tool's hook approval.

Getting started

Installation. The site and FAQ give npx impeccable install from the project root, with prompts for the coding tool and install scope, followed by a reload of the coding tool; this installer needs Node.js 18.19 or later, and the engines field in package.json is likewise >=18.19.0. The README also lists a Git submodule, plugin installs, a ZIP from the website and copying from the repository. The GitHub Copilot app has Impeccable built in, turned on under Settings → Experimental.

Setup. /impeccable init in the agent chat writes PRODUCT.md, and /impeccable hooks on turns on automatic checks. Codex requires approving the project hook in /hooks, and Grok Build requires trusting the project folder.

Updates. npx impeccable update replaces the bundled files and leaves PRODUCT.md and DESIGN.md alone.

Turning reporting off. npx impeccable telemetry off, or the environment variable IMPECCABLE_NO_TELEMETRY=1 or DO_NOT_TRACK=1; IMPECCABLE_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 turns off the version check.

Pricing & license

Software: free. The FAQ says the public skills, commands, CLI and detection engine are free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

Costs: usage charges from the coding tool or model provider are separate, image generation included; Impeccable's own image generator with OPENAI_API_KEY bills that key. The company page lists an automated design-check product for pull requests marked In closed beta, and the privacy policy mentions an Impeccable Pro waitlist.

Licence: The LICENSE carries the Apache License 2.0 terms and ends with Copyright 2025 Paul Bakaus; NOTICE.md at the repository root lists a third-party source: the ios.md and android.md platform references derive from ehmo's platform-design-skills (MIT). The GitHub API and package.json both mark it Apache-2.0.

Risks & limits

Outbound requests and records. The privacy policy says project checks run locally and do not upload project files or detection results. The design-direction feature requests options from impeccable.style/api/roll and can report the kind and position of the chosen card; records hold no IP, project content or user or device ID, sit in Cloudflare services with no fixed deletion date, and cannot be looked up or deleted for a single user.

Website analytics. The privacy policy says the homepage uses Google Analytics and every page uses PostHog, recording page views, copied commands and install method among other things; the website collects the same data when a browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.

Hooks and local scripts. The README says command hooks added in Claude Code run independently of model-tool approval, so the first edit can download and cache the detection engine; when live mode applies copy edits it runs the optional impeccable:manual-edit-validate script from package.json in a shell with the current user's permissions.

Channel versions. Issue #1023, a user report, says the ChatGPT plugin still showed v4.3.1 when the skill was at v4.5.2; as of 2026-10-26 the issue is open.

Detector scope. The README says a clean detector run is evidence, not proof of visual or accessibility quality.

Differing statements in vendor materials:

  • Command list: the README says 24 commands, and its command table includes craft but not impeccable; the Command reference in the docs lists 24 entries in six groups (2, 2, 8, 3, 4, 5), including impeccable but not craft.

Our verdict

Impeccable lets AI coding tools work from two project context files, PRODUCT.md and DESIGN.md, and 24 commands when building frontends, with 62 detector rules that run without an LLM and can run in CI; it is Apache-2.0, and its installer supports Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Grok Build and other tools.

Its limits: the design-direction feature calls the site's API, with reporting that can be switched off; command hooks in Claude Code run independently of model-tool approval; live mode runs a validation script from the project in a shell; and the FAQ says live and generate work with web projects.
