Nexus Mods now requires authors to declare whether AI was used in new mods

PC game modding site Nexus Mods said on November 3 that authors uploading a new mod must now declare whether AI was used, and mods tagged AI-assisted must publicly explain how and where. The site will not ban AI-generated mods outright because AI now runs through the whole process, from code autocompletion to textures and voices, and a ban would only stop people disclosing it. Existing mods get a 60-day grace period; after that, authors who do not comply face warnings, account restrictions or removal. New permissions covering AI use, training and derivative mods are coming, defaulting to "Ask me". Nexus Mods says it will not train AI on mods or sell them to anyone who does. It also said 20,000 uploads were quarantined for security checks in the past year, 12 times the year before.

Why it matters

As AI-made content floods creator communities, Nexus Mods chose mandatory labeling over a ban, an approach other content platforms can weigh.
