Google acquires Crusoe's Wyoming AI data center site

Crusoe said on November 6 that Google has acquired its data center site in southeast Wyoming; the announcement did not disclose terms. The deal ends Crusoe's pre-development role, which covered site selection, government approvals and a hybrid power plan built with Tallgrass Energy that combines fuel cells, grid power and natural gas turbines, with a longer-term path to regional CO2 sequestration. Crusoe says it has more than 6 GW contracted and over 40 GW in its pipeline, and it is still developing another Google campus near Amarillo, Texas.

Why it matters A hyperscaler taking over an independent developer's AI campus shows how hard giant AI data center projects are to deliver, and who ends up controlling them.

Google explains how it trained EmbeddingGemma 2, a 744M-parameter model that searches across text, images, audio and video

Cross-media search often turns speech and images into text, losing detail, or needs multibillion-parameter models too big for phones. Google's EmbeddingGemma team detailed EmbeddingGemma 2, a 744M-parameter model turning text, images, audio and video into comparable number vectors. Compressed, it needs about 191 MB on a phone for text. Its general English score dips slightly from its predecessor.

Why it matters Developers can use this Apache 2.0 open model to search across text, images, audio and video right on a phone, which suits apps that need privacy or offline use.

Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic back a shared robots.txt signal for opting out of AI training

Google will support a shared AI training control in robots.txt based on an IETF AIPREF draft: one 'policy token' states a site's training preference to many AI providers at once, while controls like Google-Extended keep working. The Verge reports OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic will honor it too; Anthropic already does, Google and Microsoft plan support next year, OpenAI in coming months.

Why it matters It is the first time the major AI labs have lined up behind one opt-out signal for training, simplifying crawler control for publishers and shaping how training data is gathered.

Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite returns its first AI response from Gemma 4 on a TPU in orbit

Google Research says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, launched earlier this month, finished commissioning and ran early ML tests on its TPUs. This week the onboard Gemma 4 open model answered an uplinked prompt with a space haiku, which Google calls the first response from a data center class TPU in orbit. Thermal and radiation tests are next; twin satellites are planned for 2027.

Why it matters It is the first in-orbit check of Google's plan to power AI compute with solar energy in space, one possible route around the power and cooling limits facing ground data centers.

Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, slides and spreadsheets in chat

Google says the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files inside a chat: users can expand a file to full screen and type edits, highlight text to ask questions, or have Gemini revise it. PDF preview and editing work on web and mobile; Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code are web-only for now. It is available to users in every language the Gemini app supports.

Why it matters Files made in Gemini can now be revised without leaving the app for Docs or Sheets.

Google will shut down Jules on December 31; it goes read-only after November 11

The official Jules changelog says Jules will wind down on December 31, 2026. Sessions can be finished until November 11; after that Jules is read-only until year end. Jules Tools (npm install -g @google/jules) exports settings, env variables, scheduled tasks, connected repos, memories and full session history locally. Code, branches and pull requests stay in GitHub.

Why it matters Google will shut down the async coding agent Jules on December 31, read-only after November 11, folding its learnings into Antigravity.

Google launches Connected Apps Platform preview, letting developers bring apps into Gemini and Search via MCP

On October 28 Google launched a preview of its Connected Apps Platform. Developers connect a cloud-hosted MCP server or Android MCP via the AppFunctions APIs, then register, test and submit apps in the Google Connected Console for Search, the Gemini app or both, and track traffic and errors. Access opens in phases, starting with U.S. developers. Google says 50+ Connected Apps are live.

Why it matters Google is making MCP the standard way for third-party apps to plug into Gemini and Search, opening a new distribution channel for developers in AI assistants, similar to app integrations in ChatGPT and others.

Google unveils frontier model Gemini 4 Carbon, focused on cybersecurity and long-horizon tasks, initially for select cyber defenders

Google DeepMind released Gemini 4 Carbon on Oct 28, saying it ranks first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 at 59 and scores 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, 54.8% on ExploitGym and 71.0% on CWE-bench (vendor figures). A subset of cyber defenders gets access this week, with developers and consumers to follow; launch pricing is $2/$10 per million input/output tokens.

Why it matters About four weeks after announcing Gemini 4 Argon (Sep 30; generally available Oct 13), Google is leading its new flagship with vulnerability finding, exploit validation and patching, again rolling out to restricted users first.

Gemini API now stores Generate Content requests by default for new paid-tier projects

Google's Gemini API changelog says that from Oct 26, new paid-tier projects using the Generate Content API (generateContent, streamGenerateContent, batchGenerateContent) store requests by default (store=true), matching the Interactions API. Existing projects keep their setting; developers can opt out with store=false or in the Logs and Datasets settings.

Why it matters A storage-on default changes data-retention and compliance assumptions for apps built on Gemini; new projects handling sensitive data need to check and opt out explicitly.

iOS 27.2 adds Google's SynthID invisible watermark to Image Playground images and some Apple Intelligence photo edits

Apple has switched on SynthID watermarking in iOS 27.2. Every Image Playground image carries it, as do Photos edits made with Extend and Reframe; Clean Up adds it only for larger edits, per MacRumors' tests. SynthID, built by Google, embeds the mark in pixels. The iPhone has no detector; images must be checked on Google's SynthID Detector site.

Why it matters By adopting Google's SynthID instead of its own scheme, Apple makes AI-made and AI-edited iPhone images detectable by outside tools, widening SynthID's reach.
