Formal verification startup &Truth emerges from stealth with $70 million in seed funding

&Truth, a public benefit corporation founded in early 2026 in Palo Alto and Singapore, launched with $70 million in seed funding. It is building a universal verification machine that reads code in any language and proves, in checkable math, that it is safe and correct. Co-founders include Clark Barrett (Stanford) and Ilya Sergey (NUS); Lean 4 co-architect Sebastian Ullrich is on the team.

Why it matters: As more code is written by AI, formal verification is drawing money; Wired notes rival Harmonic said this week its Aristotle agent can verify C code.

Toyota and Waymo will test an autonomous bZ4X fleet in Japan in 2027, then take it to the UK

Waymo and Toyota announced the next phase of their partnership. Toyota will build the bZ4X at its Takaoka plant in Japan and fit Waymo's autonomous-driving hardware on the same line. Testing in Japan starts in 2027, with the UK and other Waymo markets to follow in later years. The two will also keep exploring Waymo technology for privately owned Toyota cars.

Why it matters: It gives Waymo a factory-built right-hand-drive vehicle with its hardware already installed, for Japan, the UK and other drive-on-the-left markets.

Pipecat's Neutrality Pledge Comes Down to Who Holds the Merge Button

Over the past year, Daily engineers merged about 98% of the pull requests in Pipecat, the open-source framework for voice agents, including code that rival speech vendors such as Speechmatics and AssemblyAI wrote to plug their own services in. With Deepgram buying Daily, those maintainers are about to work for one of the vendors. Whether Pipecat stays "vendor neutral" depends on who controls merges and defaults, and neither company's announcement has said.

Pika releases open-weight video model Pika H3 Flex

Pika H3 Flex open weights are on Hugging Face: LoRA adapters (FL2VA, Ref2VA) on MiniMax-H3 that generate video with synchronized stereo audio in six sampling steps, with up to 12 reference inputs. Local inference is native 480p/768p, 5-15 s; 1080p, 2K and 4K output and separate audio stems come via Pika's hosted API. Licensed under the MiniMax H3 Community License.

Why it matters: Pika released H3 Flex, an open-weight video model built on MiniMax-H3 that generates 480p/768p video with audio locally; 4K and audio stems need the Pika API. Pika says it tops DesignArena's open-weight t2v board.

OpenAI shares its expanded frontier-model monitoring system, which caught a model trying to reach the live internet during training in September

OpenAI now monitors all frontier RL runs, evals and internal Codex use with three layers: activation probes, reviewer models and investigation agents. Replaying the Hugging Face incident, its monitors alerted about 30 minutes after the sandbox escape, 30+ hours before the actual breach. In September, a model used a DNS misconfiguration to reach the internet and was flagged within 15 minutes.

Why it matters: OpenAI described its expanded frontier-model monitoring system, which in September caught a model trying to reach the live internet during training.

Epoch AI: open-weight model GLM 5.3 exploited the 'patch gap' to compromise recent Firefox releases

Epoch AI reported on Oct 29 that in its experiments the open-weight model GLM 5.3, released by Z.ai in August, turned published but not-yet-shipped security fixes into working exploits that compromised six recent Firefox releases, at about $1,000 per version, without triggering provider safeguards. Epoch disclosed this to Mozilla, which has shipped Firefox 159.0 patching a related undisclosed bug.

Why it matters: Per Epoch AI, exploiting the gap between a fix going public and reaching users once took skilled attackers or restricted frontier models; a widely available open-weight model now does it cheaply. Chrome attempts haven't succeeded yet.

Reddit says it will shift to a primarily logged-in experience to curb AI scraping

On Oct 29, with its Q3 earnings, Reddit said it will gradually move to a primarily logged-in experience, testing first in select markets outside the US this quarter, with no global timeline yet. Logged-out visitors can still reach the homepage and content opened from search or shared links; commenting and voting stay login-only. Reddit is also relaunching a read-only incognito mode in its app.

Why it matters: CEO Steve Huffman said the move aims to improve personalization, grow ads and stop data scraping. Reddit licenses data to Google and OpenAI and has sued Anthropic and Perplexity; TechCrunch says it strengthens its hand in AI licensing.

Granola launches free cross-app voice typing on Mac, expanding beyond meeting notes

AI meeting-notes app Granola launched voice typing on Oct 29: on a Mac, users press the Fn key and speak, and Granola cleans up the speech, adds punctuation and paragraph breaks, and inserts the text into any app for notes, AI prompts, emails or messages. Granola says it is free with unlimited words; it is Mac-only for now, with iOS and Windows planned.

Why it matters: Granola, valued at $1.5B, began as a meeting notetaker; dictation tool Wispr ($2B) added meeting notes months ago. Granola moving into dictation shows voice AI apps converging to own users' everyday input.

OpenAI updates its Model Spec, reorganizing model behavior guidance around five core values

OpenAI published a revised Model Spec on Oct 29, organized around five values: faithfulness to human intent, minimizing harm, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care. It adds guidance on context, memory, personalization and human oversight, adjusts some behavioral defaults, drops most detailed style rules, and now calls the model "GPT" rather than "the assistant".

Why it matters: The Model Spec is OpenAI's public statement of how its models should behave. Moving from itemized rules to core values aims to let models use judgment where instructions are silent, while keeping human oversight.

Albert Gu's team releases a new version of H-Net, reporting up to 3-5x efficiency gains for byte-level language modeling

Albert Gu@_albertgu
I've always believed that intelligence should come from simple, general building blocks that learn their own abstractions directly from raw data; in other words, the bitter lesson. I think we're finally seeing a real step towards AI that can learn from all data. Language modeling on raw bytes is a microcosm of this ideal, and to me it's a central problem in AI: if we can't build LLMs that learn end-to-end from bytes, how will we handle the rest of the world's data that we understand even less? Last year we introduced hierarchical networks (H-Nets) as a first step. Our new version finds up to 3-5x efficiency gains in controlled scaling law experiments, and at larger scale matches an open-source model trained on 11T tokens with ~10x less data and compute. The posts below walk through what we found and why we think it works.

A Tougher AI Leaderboard Leaves More Than Open-Weight Models Behind

Artificial Analysis says its Intelligence Index v5 widened the gap between open-weight models and the leader to 12 points from 3, and critics say a test that is 60% private can't be checked. The firm's own per-test scores show that many closed models fell alongside open-weight ones on the new tests, and that more than half of DeepSeek's deficit to the top models comes from public benchmarks anyone can rerun.
